FELIP, a name synonymous with anime passion and musical brilliance, has always dreamed of bringing his artistry to Japan—the epicenter of anime culture. For fans like me, Japan is the ultimate anime playground.
And guess what? FELIP didn’t just come to the Land of the Rising Sun to roam; he brought his music, his art, and his flag to the country he once only dreamed of!
For an artist like FELIP who has long admired Japan and its rich culture, hosting his own event and concert in the country was more than just a milestone—it was the fulfillment of a dream and the opening of a door to his international career.
The Rocksta at Shibuya
On August 30, FELIP’s very first signing event was held at Tower Records Shibuya. Many of his fans dressed up like rockstars, hoping for the chance to talk with the artist they admire.
The long waiting lines also became a bonding experience for fans who shared their excitement while waiting for their turn to meet the Rocksta. And they were not disappointed! When that moment finally arrived, many tried to hold back tears of joy during their brief but memorable conversations with FELIP.
Despite looking like a badass anime character in his red hoodie, FELIP welcomed his fans with an enthusiastic smile, cracked jokes, and gave warm hugs to the lucky ones. Some didn’t hesitate to spend extra time just to greet him again and again. Surely, it was a night to remember!
The excitement didn’t end there.
On September 2, the long-awaited FELIP 7sins concert, his first-ever solo international concert, came to life in Japan. For those in attendance, it was nothing short of extraordinary. FELIP’s charisma captivated not only his Filipino fans but also the enthusiastic Japanese and international audience. Some fans traveled from across the globe to share their admiration for him, creating an atmosphere of unity and excitement despite language barriers.
Up Close with the Fans
While waiting for the photo session, I had the chance to speak with a few fans who traveled from other countries just to witness this concert. One fan, Hazel, a Filipino from Singapore, described how FELIP’s music had been an inspiration for her.
“I wanted to see him because I really like him as a person and as a performer. He doesn’t conform to the norm and doesn’t care what others think of him. His song “Fake Faces” has become a mantra for me. I used to try to please others, but not anymore, and that’s because of FELIP.”
Another fan from Taiwan, Yuling, shared how FELIP changed her life and gave her strength after she got to know him better.
“I really like FELIP. Although I haven’t been a fan for very long—only about 2 to 3 months—getting to know him better made me realize how much I appreciate his personality and the songs he creates. The most important thing is, I see him as a beacon in my heart. He has guided me from the concert in Manila to Japan. Since I started liking him, my life has changed a lot; I’ve become more open. I believe this is what he has given me, and it’s also a source of strength for other fans. I hope to become a person like him and am very grateful that he continues to share his creativity with us.”
Haruka, a fan from Japan, shared her first impression of FELIP and her excitement about the concert.
“I first knew him through SB19, and I thought, ‘He is so cool!’ His voice, and of course, his face. Overall, he looks amazing. That’s why I wanted to see him live today. I wanted to imprint him in my memory. I only learned about him a few months ago, around July, and when I found out about his concert here, I knew I had to go!”
Nanami, Haruka’s companion during the concert and the one who invited her to join, first noticed FELIP through his group, SB19.
“I first watched SB19 on TikTok and thought, ‘They are so cool!’ I got hooked. I like Josh among them, but since FELIP is coming to Japan, I persuaded her to come with me, so we came today,” she explained.
I asked them what they think of FELIP as a person. Haruka added, “FELIP is very beautiful, both in his heart and overall.”
Nanami, on the other hand, observed that there is a big gap between FELIP’s performance persona and his private self. “He looks so cool in his live performances, but his character is so cute in reality. He acts like a normal guy,” she noted.
Continuing the conversation, I added some insights of FELIP’s personality to help his Japanese fans get to know him better.
“FELIP is genuinely kind. He and I speak the same language, which is not Tagalog, but Bisaya. And when he speaks in Bisaya, I think, ‘How can he be so cute?’”
Anime in the Flesh
FELIP’s passion for anime and Japanese culture is no secret. As a long-time fan, he’s often embraced this influence in both his music and persona. Many even call him a living anime character. So, when the chance came for him to perform in the land of anime itself, it wasn’t just another performance—it was the culmination of years of admiration and love for a world that had inspired him both as an artist and an individual. As a fan who loves anime, Japan, and FELIP, the anticipation leading up to this concert was palpable.
